      <p>On Oct. 22nd 2008, two hundred architects, building owners, engineers, masonry contractors and masonry manufacturers attended our banquet to hear which of 47 <acronym title="British Columbia">BC</acronym> projects would be recognized with awards. Winners were chosen from eight building categories, ranging from high-rises to single-family homes. An additional four projects were accorded <em>Peoples' Choice</em> awards based on ballots cast during the awards reception as the guests viewed project boards that pictured each submission.</p>
      <p>Guest speaker <span rel="ev:agent"><span about="a9080c21-ac1e-4a73-b2d4-0f0e5f1678fd" typeof="foaf:Person" property="foaf:name">Michael Geller</span></span> began the festivities with an introduction that featured photos of masonry buildings gathered on his 2007 round-the-world tour. <span about="a9080c21-ac1e-4a73-b2d4-0f0e5f1678fd" typeof="foaf:Person"><span property="foaf:name">Michael Geller</span></span> is a local planner, architect and developer who also sat on the awards jury panel.</p>
      <p>Other jury members were <span rel="ev:agent"><span about="49d930bb-e43d-489f-bdbf-7d89785bad03" typeof="foaf:Person" property="foaf:name">Douglas Watts</span></span>, building envelope specialist with <span about="49d930bb-e43d-489f-bdbf-7d89785bad03" rel="foaf:member"><span about="f6369026-24e7-48e9-9960-6465b5dcedf8" typeof="foaf:Organization" property="foaf:name">Read Jones Christoffersen</span></span>; Calgary architect <span about="2af8f1d4-d275-4f2a-8f95-a20f5de8288b" typeof="foaf:Person"><span property="foaf:name">Ken Hutchinson</span></span>, and retired masonry contractor <span about="b0e4166d-f355-423d-ac40-6e9edecf54f7" typeof="foaf:Person"><span property="foaf:name">Peter Zirpke</span></span>.</p>
      <p>A special award recognized the past and present commitment to masonry for both institutional and residential buildings at <acronym title="University of British Columbia">UBC</acronym>. The award plaque was accepted by <span rel="ev:agent"><span about="e80cf63a-2c9d-453f-a627-08bb9d1bee79" typeof="foaf:Person" property="foaf:name">Al Poettcker</span></span>, <acronym title="Chief Executive Officer">CEO</acronym> of <acronym title="University of British Columbia">UBC</acronym> Properties Trust, who noted <q>I have always had a personal preference for masonry, and we value both the appearance and the durability that it provides for projects at the university.</q></p>
